What ESIA verification changes for your .RU domain

ESIA is Russia’s Unified Identification and Authentication System, the login most people meet through Gosuslugi. Since 1 September 2026 it sits between the recorded administrator and the operations that keep a domain alive: registration, renewal, nameserver changes, transfer. For a domain you already hold, what matters is less the statute than the day your own registrar switched over.

The practical start

Before you buy a trustee service, put three questions to your current registrar. Is its account already running under the new verification process? Which administrator is on record? What action falls due next? The answers usually narrow the problem faster than any general guide can.

Do foreign administrators need ESIA for .RU operations?

The 2026 framework ties domain operations to the recorded administrator’s verified identity. Whether a foreign individual or company can complete that route depends on recognised Russian status or presence, and on how far the registrar has taken its own process. One point gets missed often: using a verified trustee does not verify you. The trustee’s eligibility is the trustee’s. The customer still needs a formal administrator arrangement.

What if Gosuslugi verification is not available to me?

Find out where your registrar actually stands, and what your domain needs next. A domain is not deleted on the day a rule takes effect. But a blocked renewal, a nameserver change you cannot make, or a transfer that will not start can each turn urgent quickly. Weigh an accepted document route against an administrator change, and leave time for the application. Notarised paperwork does not move at web speed.

The law versus the rollout

Two instruments, not one. Atak Domain’s updated .RU guidance describes Federal Law No. 569-FZ and Government Decree No. 1119 as the basis of the rules applied from 1 September 2026.

Registrars accredited before that date were given a staged transition, with 18 January 2027 as the latest switchover. Read that carefully: it is a deadline for registrars, not a universal deadline for every domain. What is urgent for you falls out of two facts: which registrar holds the name, and when it expires.

Who may qualify directly

A Russian citizen or a Russian-established company may be able to complete ESIA verification without any intermediary. Atak Domain’s current guidance also describes two less obvious routes:

  • a foreign individual with recognised Russian residence or work status;
  • a foreign company with an accredited Russian branch.

Whether either applies turns on the applicant’s actual status and on what the registrar will accept. Neither is a formality.

When a trustee is relevant

If the administrator cannot complete an accepted verification route, an eligible trustee can be recorded as administrator once a formal change application goes through. After that, your commercial control rests on the agreement rather than on the registry entry. A trustee is not a way of leaving the existing administrator record untouched. Changing that record is the entire point.

What to do before expiry

Check three things: where the registrar stands on processing, the expiry date, and whether any holds sit on the domain. If a renewal cannot be processed, resolve the identity or administrator requirement first. A grace period is not a plan.

And do not assume .RU, .РФ and .SU are handled identically. They sit under the same administration, but the operational detail can differ between them.

These cover the regulatory background. Registrar operations still need case-specific confirmation, because implementation is where the accounts differ.
