Russian domain administration

.RU ESIA Administrator Change

Federal Law No. 569-FZ came into force on 1 September 2026. Since then, renewing or changing a .RU domain has depended on ESIA verification. Three routes remain open if you cannot complete it from abroad: direct verification, your registrar’s document process, or an eligible trustee. Start by finding out who is recorded as the administrator today — it is often not who you think.

Download the Russian administrator-change form (.DOCX) From Atak Domain’s application guide · Check your registrar and trustee account before signing.

Operated by Atak Domain Bilgi Teknolojileri Anonim Şirketi, an ICANN-accredited registrar, IANA ID 1601. Worth verifying before you rely on it.

Who is this for?

Anyone who already holds a .RU, .РФ or .SU domain and has hit the verification wall. If you are registering for the first time instead, you want availability and prices at Atak Domain ↗, and you should still read the route section below before you order.

Registering from abroad

Who will be the verified administrator?

Decide that before you order, not after. Our guide for foreign applicants ↗ sets out the direct ESIA route and the trustee route side by side. Once you know which one applies, check availability and register ↗.

01 / The rules

What changed on 1 September 2026

Two instruments: Federal Law No. 569-FZ and Government Decree No. 1119. From that date, identity verification through ESIA (Russia’s unified identification and authentication system, the one behind the Gosuslugi portal) sits in front of registration, renewal, DNS changes and transfers on .RU, .РФ and .SU. Registrars accredited earlier were given a staged transition running to 18 January 2027 at the latest, so the date that matters to you is your registrar’s rather than the statute’s.

The registry

.RU is administered by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, and its two announcements on this are the authority: the regulatory changes from 1 September 2026 ↗ and the administrator verification update of 29 April 2026 ↗.

Your registrar

Deadlines, accepted documents and which account actions still work are set by whoever holds the domain today. Ask them in writing.

02 / Your route

Three ways out, and they are not equal

Which one is open to you depends on the record, not on preference. These are paths to assess. None of them is an automatic yes.

A

You can verify directly

The recorded administrator holds a Gosuslugi account, or can open one. Ask the registrar which verification method it accepts today. Not every registrar has finished switching over.

B

Your registrar offers a document route

Some registrars will take signed paperwork instead of a live ESIA login. Ask before your renewal date.

C

You need an administrator arrangement

Most foreign companies end up here, because there is no Russian legal entity to verify. The trustee becomes the administrator of record. Check eligibility, the contract terms and your exit route before you sign.

The order to do it in

Full process ↗
01

Check the record

Registrar, recorded administrator, status, expiry date. The person who pays the invoice and the party written into the registry are often not the same.

02

Ask what your registrar can process

Direct ESIA, a document route, or a trustee. Availability differs by registrar.

03

Prepare the form

Download the Russian DOCX ↗. It must be completed in Russian and notarised. An apostille is not required, though check whether your current registrar asks for one anyway, because some do. You will also need the trustee account number and the ESIA-verified company name to write into it; support supplies the current values.

04

Agree control, then sign

Who changes DNS, who pays the renewal, and how the domain comes back to you. Settle this before the record moves, not after.

04 / Paperwork

What you actually have to hand over

Requirements split by applicant type. Both lists assume the administrator record is moving to a verified trustee account; a direct ESIA verification needs none of this.

Legal entity

A company applying to move the administrator record to a verified trustee account.

  • The administrator-change application, printed on company letterhead, signed by an authorised signatory and stamped with the company seal. In Russian, notarised.
  • A scan of the current owner’s trade registry certificate or chamber of commerce registration, with a Russian translation.
  • The signature circular, or another document proving the signatory is authorised to sign for the company.
Individual

A person holding the domain in their own name.

  • A scan of the owner’s passport or national identity document.
  • The administrator-change application, in Russian and notarised.
The form itself

Atak Domain publishes the Russian-language DOCX used for owner and administrator change requests. Before you sign or notarise it, confirm which registrar holds the domain and which trustee account number belongs in the form.

Tell us what you need to keep working

We look at the administrator route for a domain you already hold, not at whether a name is free. Include the renewal date if you know it; it often decides which options are still practical.

  • No identity documents at this stage.
  • No registry lookup runs on this page, and nothing here is an approval. We read the case and tell you what we would need next.
  • Replies come from the Atak Domain support desk, in English.

06 / Cost

What it costs, and what it does not cover

First-year pricing turns on one question: is the domain already with Atak Domain, or does it have to be transferred first? After that it settles into an annual fee.

Already with Atak Domain $69.98

$29.99 trustee add-on plus a $39.99 administrator change, charged once in the first year.

Year two onward $99

Annual trustee service. Some Atak Domain pages still print $99.99, so check the figure in your order. Domain renewal is billed separately.

Atak Domain’s quoted service prices; confirm the total before you pay. For comparison, routing the same work through the Nic.ru trustee costs $169.00 for the first transaction and $286.00 a year after that. The difference is worth knowing before you choose a path. The trustee becomes the recorded administrator.

That is not a side effect, it is the mechanism. Your DNS, renewal and exit instructions live in the agreement rather than in the registry, so read that part closely. Control terms ↗

07 / If nothing is done

A lapsed .RU does not wait for you

Renewal failure is not a single event. It is a sequence, and each stage is harder and more expensive to reverse than the one before.

If verification is never completed Each stage costs more to reverse than the one before it.
  1. Verification fails The registrar cannot complete the renewal because ESIA verification is missing.
  2. pendingRenewal The domain is flagged for suspension. The site may already be unreachable.
  3. Grace period ends The tolerance window closes and the domain is released.
  4. Redemption Recovery is still technically possible, at a much higher cost.
  5. Released Anyone can register it. Including a competitor.
One domain, renewal close

Fix the blocker before you pay

A hold, a failed verification or an administrator mismatch will not clear itself when the renewal invoice is settled. Sometimes paying first makes the change harder.

Russia. It is the country-code top-level domain, administered by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ. A .RU site can be operated from anywhere. The extension says nothing about where the business actually is.

Единая система идентификации и аутентификации: Russia’s unified identification and authentication system. Most people meet it through the Gosuslugi portal, which is the front end for it. It is the same login Russian residents use for public services, and since 1 September 2026 it is what stands between a .RU domain and its renewal.

Notary yes, apostille no. That surprises people, because most cross-border document work in Russia asks for both. Your current registrar can still impose its own stricter requirement, so confirm with them before you pay for notarisation twice.

Availability and current prices are at Atak Domain’s .RU page. Settle the administrator question first, though. Registering is the easy half; being able to renew in twelve months is the half that decides whether the registration was worth making.

No. Registering a domain creates no mailbox. You need a mail service and the right MX records pointed at it. Account and email answers cover the setup.

No. Nothing in the extension itself requires one, and an administrator who can complete ESIA directly does not need one. Registrars may still set their own conditions. If you cannot qualify directly, compare the arrangements before you order.

Usually not. Once a trustee takes the role, they are the administrator of record, and your rights come from the agreement rather than the registry. Two separate things, easily conflated, and the reason the contract matters more than the WHOIS entry.

No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. Status, paperwork, timing, payment routes and the registrar’s own rules all have to line up.

Five to seven business days is typical for .RU, assuming the auth-code is right and the address in the WHOIS record still reaches you. Note that a .RU transfer does not add a year to the expiry date the way a .com transfer does; it moves the registrar and nothing else.

Potentially, if the incoming administrator is eligible and the registrar can process the change. Settle the exit route before you sign; afterwards you are negotiating from a weaker position.
